Bespoke Abstracted Butterfly Ring
This ring was made to commemorate a close friend’s aunty, who had sadly passed away. She was an amazing woman who had a wonderful love for life in the face of her illness and was tremendous fun. They were extremely close and she talked about her often. The idea for this ring came from a butterfly tattoo my friend has, and her aunt had gotten a similar tattoo before she passed. This ring is formed from two minimal connecting butterflies, dancing around the finger. It takes and abstracted, organic form on a first look, with the two butterflies revealing themselves as the rig is twisted around.
Butterflies symbolise many different things for different people: luck, transformation, fragility, freedom, hope, and in many cultures, including in Irish folklore, as messengers from departed loved ones, and a bridge between this and the afterlife.
I got to make a similar ring, this time in 9 carat yellow gold and sterling silver, for another friend recently who sadly lost her partner.
Jewellery can be deeply sentimental; a means of remembering a loved one and keeping their memory close. Getting to work on pieces like these is so important to me, and one of my favourite parts of making.
